Automotive Technology

Rick Vanderford, Instructor

Course Description

The mission of this ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified program is

to prepare students for entry-level employment as automotive technicians. The program

provides classroom instruction and hands-on training on the automotive systems

and their functions. The eight areas of ASE certification are taught through theory,

application and co-op opportunities.

Students learn the disassembly, repair and reassembly of components of fuel

systems, alternators, starters, ignition systems, engines, front ends, transmissions, and

brake systems. They also get advanced training which includes learning to troubleshoot

and diagnose malfunctions and repair or replace defective parts to restore the

vehicle to proper operating condition.

The automotive curriculum also includes the development of attitudes and work habits

that will satisfy the needs of the automotive industry with regard to customer service.

Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the ASE Certification Exam

(Automotive Service Excellence).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The need for automotive service technicians is expected to increase through the

year 2008, due to the expansion of the driving age population, the number of households

with multiple motor vehicles and state and local EPA program requirements. The

growing complexity of automotive technology also necessitates the demand for highly

trained mechanics and technicians.

Jobs are available in dealerships, independent service shops, store associated

shops, specialty service shops, and fleet service and maintenance. In addition to service

technicians, there are many other job opportunities.
