GRAPHICS & PRINTING COMMUNICATIONS
Course Description
The mission of the Graphics and Printing Communications program is to provide individualized classroom and practical shop experience in the field of Graphics & Printing Communications. Balancing lecture with hands-on activities, students learn skills in plate making, presswork, and bindery. Instruction also includes operating, maintaining and troubleshooting sheet-fed and duplicating presses; using materials properly; printing single and multi-color jobs; and operating cutting, folding, and binding equipment. Field trips to large printing plants and related industries help students to realize the need to become highly trained and inform them of the broad opportunities in the printing and graphics communications industry. Students follow a well-organized safety and health program dedicated to accident prevention and prediction. Safe and efficient work practices, basic occupational skills, and employability skills are an integral part of the course. Co-op opportunities are available for those students who advance and want to pursue personal career goals.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The printing and publishing industry is the nation’s third largest manufacturing enterprise. New computer-oriented imaging operations are opening doors for people with electronic imaging skills. Well-trained and educated workers can expect to find plenty of jobs and earn good wages. Positions are available such as press operator, press helper, binding and finishing operator or a combination of all three. After years of experience and additional training, these positions could lead to positions as administrators or managers, owners, estimators, schedulers, sales managers, or customer service representatives. Opportunities for employment are available at commercial printing companies as well as in-plant printing shops.
