SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY
Course Description The Surgical Technology program is designed to prepare the student for work in any environment in which invasive medical/surgical procedures are performed. Through classroom instruction, observation and clinical participation, students learn the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques combined with knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, implement tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. They become proficient in holding retractors or instruments, sponging or suctioning the operative site and cutting suture material. They may also prepare the operating room for surgical procedure. Upon completion of the program, technologists may earn a professional credential by passing a nationally administered certification examination upon completion of the program.
CAREER
OPPORTUNITIES Certified Surgical Technologists are employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, cast rooms, emergency departments, ambulatory care areas and central supply departments. They may also be employed privately by surgeons as scrub technologists and surgical first assistants, in clinics and surgical centers. According to U.S. data projections, this field is expected to experience rapid job growth.
