The mission of the Building Construction Technology is to provide theory and hands-on training that will qualify students for employment or advancement in building construction. Students erect framework including subflooring, sheathing, partitions, floor joists, studding and rafters. The curriculum also includes building preparation for trimming, installing molding, wood paneling, window sash, door frames, doors and hardware, as well as building stairs and laying floor. Detailed coverage of all aspects of light frame construction is provided. Special emphasis is placed on the use of modern tools, materials and prefabricated components in the application of interior trim, and construction of stairs and cabinet work. Safety is a major component of all aspects of training. Employability skills are a vital component of the curriculum and include appropriate work behavior and communication skills.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The construction industry employs millions of workers. Jobs are available in more than two dozen trades in the industry. Building trade workers are employed in the construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of residential and commercial buildings, highways, airports, and similar structures. There are additional career levels, which require special training and education. The average starting salary is $24,000 per year.
